Still Not News

I said it here and I still mean it.

A Phish Reunion is not yet imminent.

Do not gas up the bus.

I repeat; do not gas up the bus.

You might want to make sure it still runs, though.

Now, Phish lyricist and longtime friend of Trey Anastasio, Tom Marshall, is getting into the fray and has told PopMatters that he and Trey are writing songs and that “Trey wants Phish to come back.” Continue reading

NPR = Music

Today I’m going to give you the rundown on a great place to hear great music; NPR.

Yep.

And this isn’t your mom’s NPR; loaded with concertos or opera from “The Met”. (Okay, I meant my mom.) This is some great, alternative and even mainstream rock, folk, funk and whatever else is on the circuit these days.

So, where do we start?

How about some full concert performances streamed live and available online after-the-fact? All Songs Considered has that for you. Check out this week’s Raconteurs show from Washington DC’s 9:30 Club here. Other sets that I’ve personally enjoyed include: Dead Confederate, Wilco, Black Mountain, Doc Watson, & a terrific set from Arcade Fire.

WXPN streams a weekly concert each Friday. Check out the archived shows here. They also have their show, World Cafe.

So get on and check it out. And don’t forget, NPR is made possible by listeners like you.

New Song from The Wrens!

Ok. I bet you didn’t know I liked The Wrens. Hell, I’m beginning to wonder if you’ve even heard of them. It’s not as if they’re selling millions of albums or headlining blockbuster tours but they are a cool band that’s been around a while. I won’t pretend that I’ve been a fan of theirs forever, though. I picked up on them last year when they made an appearance on the KEXP Live Performance Podcast. I heard it once and was blown away. I listened again, and again, and again. I sought them out on the web. I learned from the podcast and their website that they’ve been around since the fall of the 1980s and, their last record (The Meadowlands) was released in 2003. I instantly ordered it on vinyl.

That brings us more or less up to today when I read on Pitchfork that they will be contributing an brand-new song to the Future Of Music Coalition‘s Net Neutrality compilation cd. Other Artists include Wilco (with a live version of Impossible Germany,) Aimee Mann, Bright Eyes, and They Might Be Giants.

This is great news. One can only hope that this will lead to a full release from The Wrens in the future.

This Is Not Yet News

Trey Anastasio is no longer absolutely ruling out playing Phish songs again but, seriously kids, lets not get too worked up.

Yep. Here’s the tantalizing bit from an interview with Rolling Stone:

“When Phish broke up, I made some comment about how I’m not gonna go around playing ‘You Enjoy Myself’ for the rest of my life,” Anastasio said with a laugh. “And it’s so funny because Fish and Mike and Page have been talking to each other a lot lately and now — it’s not that I can’t believe that I said that, but its symbolic of how much I lost my mind or how much I lost my bearings or something. Because at this point in time I would give my left nut to play that song five times in a row every day until I die. I certainly thought about that while I was in jail.”

Sleep… I Could Use It

I really shouldn’t complain.  When Emmet wakes in the night, I’m not the one who has to wake up and feed him. But I do wake up if only for a few minutes at a time. Those interruptions are intefering with quality, restful, sleep and that is leading to exhaustion, grumpiness, and exhaustion.

Yes. I typed it twice on accident but left it there on purpose.  That sort of thing happens when you do not get quality sleep. Not only do I know this because I’m living it, but because I read it here. That article also explained why my typing is unusually awful today and whatever you do, don’t expect me to remember tomorrow what you might try to teach me today.

It’s just not gonna happen.
