J.M. Hart is Jonathan Hart, aka rowjimmy.
A life-long Virginian, he lives with with wife and children a comfortable distance away from both Richmond and Washington, D.C. yet within striking distance should a worthwhile concert make the calendar. His primary vice is collecting records; a habit he picked up in 1990. There appears to be no cure.
Jonathan has been writing songs for decades, mostly keeping to himself aside from a few stints co-writing with friends. A few years back, he collaborated on a couple songs with Scott Ferber, drummer for the Colorado-based band, The Jauntee.
As of September, 2020, he’s begun releasing music via Bandcamp. You can find his work at jmhart.bandcamp.com as well as on most streaming services. Check the Quick-Links page to find all of the things. His full, mostly up-to-date, listing of releases is on the Discography page.
In his own work, Jonathan casts a wide net across genres. “Singer-Songwriter” is an easy non-answer but there are elements of 60s & 70s rock, folk, and folk rock. Psychedelia across all eras seeps into the work at times but all musical elements are intended to serve the song. In addition to writing and singing, Jonathan plays acoustic & electric guitar and dabbles with bass guitar, mountain dulcimer, banjo, and keyboards.
In the 2010s, Jonathan found himself involved in podcasting with the long-running Phish podcast, The Helping Friendly Podcast. He co-hosted for nearly ten years and, along the way dropped into a number of other shows. He kicked off his own show, The Brokedown Podcast, in 2017, discussing the Grateful Dead, and interviewing artists across a broad spectrum of music, leaning towards improvisation and exploring a substantial array of sounds. He set aside podcasting in 2025 in favor of pursuing his own music as well as family time but you can find all of his podcasting work on the Podcast page.
Jonathan carries the Brokedown name forward into the future with the new Brokedown Radio via online station, NQRA. Here he plays cuts both new and deep from his record collection revealing his own expansive interests and influences. Check out NQRA.live for Brokedown Radio and many more terrific shows.
