Nels Cline + Thurston Moore = Wow

Hopefully you dug the stuff from yesterday. If not, this may be a bit rough for you. If so, this still may be a bit rough for you.

On 1996-12-30 Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and Nels Cline played a one-off,in-store performance @ Rhino Records in Westwood, CA. The whole thing ran short of an hour and it’s one, long improvisation. Today, we have three clips from that performance.

That very same day they recorded their album Pillow Wand which is similar in the respect that it is a lengthy improvisation… but is actually a bit more at ease. And yes, the performance @ Rhino was released on a small indie label and is, at times, referred to as a bootleg and sold for a lot of money. (Via google, I found it for $92. Ouch.)

Oh, and just so you guys don’t think I’ve gone totally bonkers with noise rock, here’s some sweet music from another of my new favorite bands, Rilo Kiley. This is a captured web-stream of a Live, In-Studio performance of their songs, “Does He Love You” and “It Just Is.” The video is not really well synced but the audio is great (for what it is.)

I absolutely adore that first song, “Does He Love You.” I’m not even sure what it is but it hooks me something strong.

More on them soon.

Scott Amendola Band

The two things I learned at Bonnaroo this year are that I love the Scott Amendola Band and that Nels Cline is one of my favorite guitarists. This happened during a late night set in the Blue Note sponsored Somethin’ Else tent. The tent was tricked out like a dark jazz club with large round tables and air conditioning and table service for your beverage needs. (I know a/c and waitresses don’t sound special but, remember this was at a massive 4-day outdoor festival. This was practically luxurious.)

So this band features Scott Amendola on drums (he’s played with a ton of folks from Nora Jones to Charlie Hunter to Phil Lesh to Pat Martino) and John Shifflett on bass. Both were amazing.

The mesmerizing Jenny Scheinman on violin. (I sat directly in front of her so, she dominated my perspective as you can see below.)

And, of course, the previously mentioned Nels Cline. This guy just blows me away in his work with Wilco, Scott Amendola Band and his own solo projects.

Anyway, today I found this video clip of the show. Check it out below. If you really like it, you can grab the whole thing on bt.etree.

Progess

Things are coming along.

You’ll notice the old posts that I managed to salvage from my Blogger.com blog below. Also, I have begun salvaging the old website. For now, you can see it here.

I’d like to thank Timothy Brown for the stellar photo of Wilco at Merriweather Post Pavilion. I blurred it up for kicks but you can see the original version here.

Here’s a shot I took of Wilco at Bonnaroo:

Yeah, my location wasn’t the best for my old camera.

This shot came out nicely, though.

That’s Nels Cline. He plays guitar in Wilco but, in that shot, he’s playing with the Scott Amendola Band. Theirs was one of my favorite sets at Bonnaroo.

Heading To Bonnaroo

Well, It’s June 1st and that means the Bonnaroo Fest is just around the corner. 13 days 3 hours… and counting, actually. This year I’m actually going. My ticket arrived yesterday

And well, this is going to be a good time.

I’ll be back soon to tell you more!

Let’s Get Primal

Never mind the potential intellectual property issues, YouTube has got a hookup for the old-school Grateful Dead.
Check out this clip of Viola Lee Blues circa. 1967.

It pretty much speaks for itself.
