Its been a couple of days and the after effects are clearing up from Friday's show... Thought I'd pull out my setlist and give y'all (note: thats Virginia-Speak for "you all") my take on the show.
"Wow."
That would sum it up but, I have a couple of other notes here to lay on you too. As the guitar info has been posted I won't worry about all that (which is good because that sort of detail didn't make the page as the evening moved along). Also, this was my first KVHW show in the flesh, so I can't be too objective as it would conflict with my fanboy giddiness.
The opener, A New Africa was awesome (9:30-9:46). Ray conducted the cheering and he and Steve were very tight and together; which made for a good first impression. Cissy Strut (9:47-9:59) did indeed fire the audience up. DC is a good town to work the Funk and work it they did.
Next, Same World (9:59-10:08) paid off my hopes for that song. Not a particulary extended version but quite sweet. Slumber (10:08-10:24) had several of the unitiated guessing but they, like me, dug it. Steve laid down some very sweet slide on the strat.
Next, Steve brought out the steel guitar for Shotgun House (10:25-10:38). This was hot and the change into Mr. Potato Head (10:38-10:45) had the entire room dancing; including the bartenders. I forgot about my drink, setlist and my ego and danced straight through Potato. I did notice a Winter Wonderland tease which had Steve grinning from ear to ear. After this I was ecstatic and expecting setbreak but, all good things come In Time (10:45-10:58) (I apoligize for that cheesy sentence but, sometimes that stuff just happens). That made for a hot set closer which must've kept some folks around to hear what was next.
During intermission I re-aquainted myself with the folks I had come with, met a few folks and enjoyed this wonderful theater that's practically around the corner from my house. With several bars, plenty of room for dancing and, management that likes to bring in good acts, who can complain!
Also, I picked up a CD (Life At The Lip) and, while there, I spoke to the Merch guy whose name I've forgotten. He tipped me off that I can expect more East Coast Toast in February.1
Set two opened up with one for the Zappa freaks, City of Tiny Lights (11:27-11:38). This was really cool and, as I haven't seen it as much as some folks had, I relished every bit. Ray is great and really on it as a front man- Mad props to Mr. White. Rings Around The Moon (11:39-11:52) came next and was as stellar as any that I've heard. It really did it for me as I found my dancing spot for the set. Ray's Virginia Bong Song (11:54-11:55) improv was a good laugh, followed by more Funk for the People with 5 B4 Funk.
Note that I do not list the timings. At this point in the show, the grooves were strong, the band was tight and the crowd (myself included) was too into it (aside for those at the bars who, as one would expect, had plenty to discuss) for excessive note-taking. A nice Footprints followed for the spinners with Steve making his strat ring out beautifully in that little 'ol theater.
Point of No Return (?-12:50) came at the right moment. I, for one, found myself utterly enthralled at this point and there was no going back. This set had fully converted me into a serious KVHW fan from a casual listener. After Bad Hair, which ruled, Spanish Castle Magic (1:05-1:14) floored me. Ray threw in some Wharf Rat lyrics to please the Dead Heads (like myself) and, as they left the stage to a tremendous ovation Ray said "Goodnight, we're real tired and we've got a long way to go..."
But they weren't going anywhere. The crowd wouldn't let up yelling, clapping and stomping their feet so out they came. I expected a short, sweet encore (though I had no idea what would fit that bill) but, instead, they played Hillbillies On PCP (1:18-1:35). My setlist has one note for that song, "Amazing Sh*t". And amazing it was. They blew the roof off of the joint with that one and we went home happy. Thrilled. Giddy. And, delirious.
