I Made You A Mixtape…

rjmuxtape.png

I’m one of those music geeks that Nick Hornby was writing about in High Fidelity; the type that finds a song for everything, makes top five lists for fun and, if I got a date, I’d make her a mixtape. I’d also make them for myself as a way to collect what I’m really digging on at a particular moment in time. They serve as a sort of audio time capsule. Perhaps, if I laid out every mixtape I’d ever made, I might would find a road map through both my emotional history and the winding course of my musical tastes. It would certainly add up to an extraordinary length of magnetic tape capped by a few dozen compact discs…

There’s been a few sites online that allow you to compile a playlist and stream it for listeners and I’ve finally gotten on board with one for the first time: muxtape.com. Basically (and it is basic; that’s one of the things I like,) you upload 12 songs, sort as you wish and, viola! You have a mix muxtape!

You can also listen to other people’s muxtapes by picking one straight off the homepage or, perhaps, someone will link you to one that they’ve created. You can hear mine by clicking: http://rowjimmy.muxtape.com (or click the tape at the top of this post.) Also, you can keep up with your muxtape news by heading to their blog, here.

Enjoy.

Akron/Family – Love Is Simple

I’m gonna spend a few minutes telling you about an amazing album and band that came to my attention late last year and has been blowing my mind since day one. The band is Akron/Family. The album is their 2007 release, Love Is Simple.

Akron/Family – Love Is Simple

I was going to do a song-by-song breakdown of this record but it seems to defeat what they’ve concocted to split it out into its component parts. The album alternate between heady percussive chants (akin to something I might have heard in the lot on Grateful Dead tour) to soaring, steel guitars and plaintive choruses that evoke George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. If that doesn’t grab you, hold on for a few minutes because the next bit may well sound completely different.

The influences aren’t buried on this record, in fact, they bleed through. However, as the first line of the album points out (“Every precious human being is a precious parent to you,”) we are all indebted to our past and predecessors; best to embrace them. Spatterings of early Zappa intermingle with Satanic Majesty-era Stones and Ummagumma-era Pink Floyd with bits of Yes thrown in on top. All of this churns together in a rapturous celebration of Life, Love, and Humanity that may be akin to an hour-long acid trip.*

The first time I listened to this album on headphones, it notably disoriented me at several points and, at others, caught hold of my emotions and drove me to further distraction. I had visions of a shamanic, hippie celebration; held in an ancient forest clearing; with an electric rock band, copious hand percussion, lots of hair, and mushrooms. This is probably not an album for a late-night country drive. I feel that it is more suited to headphones or small-group listening experiments. It is also a teaser for a band whose live show I must see as soon as possible. One wonders what of this euphoric studio work will carry over to the stage… According to this review, it does:

To look at them, you’d see a bunch of pretty regular looking guys but put instruments in their hands, crank the PA (they do like it LOUD!) and you’ll see them sweat off some of the natural inhibitions that keep human beings from evolving. Watching them leap and cavort in SF, one felt part of some beautiful cataclysm that precedes growth.

-Dennis Cook (Jambase.com)

Sounds like a compelling gig to me. So these guys are on the rise, blowing minds left, right, up, and down. Check out this record under ideal conditions and thank me later.

I’ll leave you today with a feature on the band from Current.tv followed by a couple links:

Critical Apps

So I have spent some time over the past few days building a new(ish) machine for myself and I thought that I’d take a few moments to get techy on you guys and talk about the apps that I need to survive. these are programs that I install on any machine that I will use for any purpose. Even on this machine will will not be my primary internet and entertainment box, there are certain tools that I never want to be without.

Bear in mind, people, that I’m a PC user… I haven’t gone Apple yet. (Sorry, Mr. Jobs!)

1) Firefox: Yep. I use it and I love it. Of course it’s not the same without a couple critical addons:
a) Adblock Plus: It’s a must.
b) Tab Mix Plus: Tab browsing on steroids, people. This helps you make the most of the tabbed interface.

2) Open Office: Documents of any format that I’ll have to worry about; All of the features that I need from an office suite; PDF creation; Free…

3) Acrobat Reader: Did someone say “PDF”? Gotta have it.

gimp

4) Gimp: You can do anything with this product. Why buy Photoshop?

5) Foobar2000: Plays any audio file. Handles conversions and so much more… Oh! It has a tiny memory footprint, taboot. Free.

6) VideoLan Player (VLC): Also plays most audio files and most video files… for free. I only use it for video, though (see #5)

7) WinRar: This app will compress/uncompress pretty much any file (.zip, .rar, .tar, .cab, etc…)

Seriously. These apps are my life’s blood. What’d I miss?

Withdrawal…

You know you are an internet junkie when…

You try to go to one of your favorite sites and get this:

and, as the shakes settle in, you repeatedly click reload, you try retyping the urlĀ  in hopes that, somehow your bookmark has gotten screwy (never happens, btw.)

Anyway, if you know what I’m talking about, feel free to post a comment sharing your frustration…

Get Lost?

Lost

So… I’m a big fan of Lost.

There aren’t too many shows that I’m obsessively interested in these days (and not just because the Writer’s Strike has crippled the current season.) This show just involves my brain on so many levels that I actually find myself willing the week to pass so that I can see the next episode. It’s terrible to wish one’s life away, I know, and I tend to admonish myself for such thoughts but, still… The wait for Thursday night at nine seems awfully long.

To pass the time in between shows, I talk with friends about what the hell is a happening on that island and read everything I can- that is not a spoiler- in hopes of putting together the puzzle. Recently, while attempting to convert a non-believer, I likened the depth of the show’s content to a T.S. Eliot poem. Perhaps it’s not quite art on the same level; but the meaning given to every little detail in the show is amazing.

If you don’t watch, start now. ABC is streaming all of the three previous seasons on their website (and new episodes are added the day after they air.) You’ll thank me later.

If you do watch, may I suggest Lostpedia as a source for more details that you may have missed. These guys are watching the show with notepads and are collecting all of the minutiae in an ordered, easy to search site. If you are really into the show, you can create an account and start contributing. I have just begun, myself.

This leads me to link #3. I’ve created a Lost Theories page on my site (the link can always be found in the upper right, under “Pages”) where I’ll be trying to condense my various, wild ideas about the show into words. Check it regularly for changes and leave a comment if you think I’m nuts or if you agree!

One more thing! If you’re a fan and you haven’t heard, you’ll be thrilled to know that our strike shortened season has been extended from eight episodes to thirteen! There will be a four to five week break after the initial eight shows followed by five more shows. I can’t wait. Oh, and please don’t call the house on Thursdays after nine, okay? Thanks.
